A special family from Colorado in the United States have set themselves the grueling challenge to swim more than 2500 kilometres along the whole length of the Murray River in just 90 days.

Eric Helmick and his sons, 25-year-old Hunter and 16-year-old Tuck have come to Australia to inspire young people across the country and prove that everyone has worth in the world.

By doing something incredible, they are hoping to inspire people to realise they can do anything too.

They have created an essay competition titled the ‘Take Your Dream’ in order to make young people think and recognise their dreams and help them realise that they can achieve them.

Eric said they have spent the last week visiting schools in the Murraylands explaining what lies ahead.

“The kids are really excited, the whole thing of someone else believing in them is just great,” he said.

“We’re not promising to make dreams come true, there are a number of excellent organizations that do that. We are simply stating that if you want to explore your dream, you need to be passionate about it, define it, explore it, and take it.”

“We have been saying to the students, we believe in you.”

They will begin their swim on November 5 starting from Corryong, Victoria and expect to be in Murray Bridge around Australia Day.

Eric and Hunter will be completing the swim while Tuck will be working on the logistics.

Travelling with their shore crew, they plan to set up marquees at Sturt Reserve for a celebration with the community.

They will also be stopping at every town along the way or anywhere there are people along the side of the river, hoping to catch up with people and spread their passion for life with their tagline ‘Team Help for anyone that has lost hope’.

“Anyone can relate to the feeling of losing hope, everyone has those days where they don’t want to get out of bed, we just want to be there and say ‘you can do this’,” Eric said.

“In Australia, there is a high suicide rate among youth, we just want to inspire people to do more with their life.”
